Luxemburg ligt op een strategische plek, hoog op een rots die aan drie kanten wordt omringd door rivieren. De stad ontstond in de tiende eeuw en was ooit beschermd door drie stadsmuren. Luxemburg bestaat grofweg uit twee delen. De bovenstad, Ville Haute, waar vroeger de aristocratie woonde. En de onderstad, Grund, voor het plebs. Via trappen en wandelpaden loop je van de ene wijk naar de andere. Het voelt een beetje alsof je door een sprookjesstad dwaalt. Vanaf de onderstad kijk je omhoog naar de bovenstad, wat een imposant uitzicht geeft.
 
Tijdens een wandeling door de smalle straatjes vol karakteristieke ambachtshuizen en kleine boetiekjes kwam ik op een rustiger stukje van Grund. Ik stond onder een brug en keek omhoog naar het idyllische uitzicht van de twee stadsdelen. Ik pakte mijn camera om de bovenstad vast te leggen. Omdat het vrij ver weg was, gebruikte ik mijn semi telelens van 150 mm. Kijkend door de zoeker viel mijn aandacht naar een oud gebouw met drie torens, precies op de rand van de bovenstad. En het resultaat van dat moment zie je hieronder.
 
Het middelste deel stamt uit rond 1050 of misschien uit de twaalfde eeuw, afhankelijk van welke bron je volgt. Het was ooit onderdeel van een tweede stadsmuur. De twee ronde torens zijn later gebouwd, waarschijnlijk in de dertiende of veertiende eeuw. Het geheel diende als toegang tot zowel de bovenstad als een gevangenis. Vanuit deze torens kijk je uit over de Pfaffenthal vallei. Deze drie torens staan ook wel bekend als Porte du Pfaffenthal.

Luxembourg City sits in a remarkable location, perched on a high rock surrounded by rivers on three sides. It emerged in the tenth century and was once protected by three city walls. The city is divided into two main areas. The upper town, Ville Haute, where the aristocracy historically lived. And the lower town, Grund, home to the working class. You move from one neighbourhood to another through stairways and winding paths. It feels almost like wandering through a fairy tale city.
 
From the lower town, the upper town appears grand and distant, almost mythical, rising above you as if it were a place reserved for gods. As I walked through the narrow streets filled with character and small boutiques, I found myself in a quieter corner of Grund. I stood under a bridge, looking up at the charming view of the two districts layered above me. I took out my camera to photograph the upper town. Since it was quite far away, I used my semi-telephoto lens, which goes up to 150 mm. While looking through the viewfinder, an old building with three towers caught my attention. It stood right on the edge of the upper town. That was the moment I took the photograph.
 
The central part dates back to around 1050, although some sources say the twelfth century. It was once part of a second city wall. The two round towers were added later, likely in the thirteenth or fourteenth century, and served as an entrance to both the upper town and the prison. From the towers you look out over the Pfaffenthal valley. This building is also known as Porte du Pfaffenthal.
