Iets wat ik heerlijk vind, is ’s avonds ronddwalen door een onbekende stad. De stad lijkt een heel ander gezicht te krijgen wanneer de zon onder is en de straatlampen je de weg wijzen door de duisternis. Wandelend in de bovenstad staart mijn hoofd naar beneden, neerbuigend voor wat het leven me zal brengen, zie ik in mijn ooghoek een straat met warme verlichting. Andere verlichting dan in de rest van de straten. Ik loop er heen en er komt net een stel uit de straat lopen. Wanneer zij weg zijn is het stil. Echt stil.
 
Ik kijk mijn ogen uit naar de verschillende lantaarn ontwerpen. De een nog sprankelde dan de ander, maar allemaal zo uniek. Wanneer ik door de straat loop hoor ik opeens links van me mensen lachen. Wat blijkt, er zit een kleine kroeg in de straat. Ik vermoed een echte buurtkroeg waarvan alleen Luxemburgers naar binnen durven. De zo stille straat waar alleen de lantaarns mij begroetten voelt nu nog levendiger. Iets wat eigenlijk wel past bij de warme lantaarns.
 
Ik heb later opgezocht waar dit precies was: Rue du St Esprit met links het restaurant Mesa Verde (gesloten op het moment van de foto).

One of my favourite things to do in a new city is to wander around at night. When the sun sets, a city reveals a different personality and the streetlights guide you through the darkness. While walking through the upper town, my eyes drifted to the ground as my mind wandered off about what life was gently handing me. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed a street glowing with warm light, different from the rest of the neighbourhood. As I approached, a couple walked out of the street. Once they were gone, it became completely silent.
 
I looked up and saw lanterns in all kinds of shapes and designs. All so unique. As I continued walking, I suddenly heard laughter coming from my left. A small local bar was tucked away here, the kind of place I imagine only true Luxembourgers would dare to enter. Just seconds before, the street felt empty and quiet, as if only the lanterns were keeping me company. But as soon as I heard the sounds from the bar, the street came alive again. The warm light above me suited that shift perfectly.
